Alex 9/18
An incredible show took place at Palace Theatre this past Thursday. I had the true joy of attending the concert of Alex G. A prolific songwriter and guitarist for over 15 years, Alex G’s music found its way into my life as a teenager and has continued to bring me a sense of serenity. Alex released his latest album Headlights in July of 2025, the same month as the launch of his international tour. The crowd was buzzing with anticipation at the start of the show and erupted when he began the set with Louisiana. I was pleasantly surprised by the modified versions of his original songs, of which the recordings are often quiet and soft. In comparison, the live adaptations of these songs were loud and booming with energy. Stage lights emanated this energy with intense beams and shadows casting on beat. His sound blends distorted vocals, melodic synth, and live instrumentation. At one point he brought out a piano accordion for his song June Guitar. He often turned his back to the audience to better play and connect with his band. I found it lovely that he continues to perform with his childhood best friend Sam, who plays guitar and sings backup vocals for Alex. The stage itself was adorned with Christmas lights and scaffolding, which Alex scaled during the song Blessing, simultaneously singing and climbing to the enthusiasm of the audience. After almost every song he shouted a “Thank you!” to the crowd. His kind and somewhat timid demeanor was charming. He concluded with an encore of four songs, ending with the performance of Crab from his very first release in 2010. Hearing many of these songs live was a surreal experience.
Additionally, Nilüfer Yanya had a stellar opening performance, the singer-songwriter from London touring with Alex G. My introduction to her was actually through Radio K’s weekly release spotlight. I was thrilled to see her perform live and she did not disappoint. Her sound incorporated seemingly effortless but intricate vocals with buzzing guitar melodies. The performance also highlighted an awesome saxophone solo by one of her bandmates. Overall this night contained two superb shows that I will hold dear in my saga of enjoying live music.
