Femi Kuti’s ‘Journey Through Life’ reinvisions Kuti’s most personal tracks in a heart-warming and uplifting album. Blending old and new, the Afrobeat legend weaves his own life within the context of world events, including government corruption and the violent legacy of colonialism in Nigeria. Kuti’s album highlights the necessity of family, including father Fela Kuti and brother Seun Kuti, both musical legends in their own respect. Femi Kuti’s classic “sweet music with a bitter message” reminds us that sticking together and dancing despite it all can be one of the most revolutionary acts.
Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist Isabel Olive, under the moniker Half Gringa, shows her unique lyrical abilities while paying beautiful homage to her heritage. With a uniquely Midwestern and Venezuelan-influenced sound, Olive’s perspective is showcased through ten cohesive and heartfelt tracks. Lyrically, the album articulates the space between emotions and the feeling of not quite fitting in any box. The world within Cosmovisión is an astute contemplation and reflection of identity and growth.
Beginning this album while in college and finishing it nearly ten years later, Lucy Liyou’s musical journey has been one of rebirth and change. ‘Every Video Without Your Face, Every Sound Without Your Name’ has gone through thematic transformations alongside Liyou’s life, with the lyrics changing especially to reflect her experience as a transgender woman. This glittering pool of ambiance is laced with gentle ballads, transcends genre and expresses deeply personal hopes and fears. Liyou’s gently-spoken and heartfelt songs are refreshing to hear, and express love in a nuanced and multifaceted way–through both the lyrics and the space surrounding them.
Pink Must, composed of artists Mari Maurice and Lynn Avery, puts forth a powerfully rich and carefully crafted debut album. The self-titled album embarks on a journey of glitchy electronic wanderings among dreamy acoustic guitar. With lo-fi beats reminiscent of Kitty Craft, wavering vocals like ML Buch, and the glittering guitar of Chanel Beads, the way this album morphs its musical influences is a true standout. This subdued and hypnotic album reaches its arms in all directions–venturing into IDM, ambient, and indie rock, Pink Must is a breath of fresh, spring air.
The latest album from The Altons, “Heartache in Room 14,” is a soulful, multilingual exploration of putting the effort into love, and of course, heartache. This jazz and Latin soul-influenced project is especially artful through its use of strings and vintage-inspired production, rounding out to be a warm listen. The sound practically wraps itself around you, with swirling psychedelic guitar and tasteful organ. “Heartache in Room 14” is a completely delicious listen.
